Red Cross swimming lessons

Red Cross swim preschool

Parent & tot lessons (4 – 36 months)

Starfish (4 – 12 months)

Orientation to water for babies and caregivers. Babies must be able to hold their heads up. Work on buoyancy and movement through songs and play and learn about water safety.

Duck (12 – 24 months)

Orientation to water for toddlers and caregivers. Learn how to use floating objects for support through games, songs and active play. Infants also learn through games and songs the basics of floating, kicking, and shallow water entries. Caregivers learn age-specific water safety.

Sea Turtle (24 – 36 months)

Orientation to water for toddlers and caregivers. Learn how to use floating objects for support through games, songs and active play. Toddlers also learn through games and songs the basics of front swim, kicking, breath control and jumping into chest-deep water. Caregivers learn age-specific water safety.

Preschool lessons (3 – 5 years)

Sea Otter

Swimmers will learn through games and songs the basics of front swim, kicking, breath control and jumping into chest-deep water. Swimmers are evaluated on performance criteria and must complete it before moving to the next level.

Salamander

Swimmers learn to swim 2 m, float unassisted for 5 seconds and use PFDs. Swimmers are evaluated on performance criteria and must complete it before moving to the next level.

Sunfish

Swimmers learn to swim 5 m, float without assistance in deep water and use PFDs. Safety skills include deep water skills. Swimmers are evaluated on performance criteria and must complete it before moving to the next level.

Crocodile

Swimmers learn to swim 5 m on their front and back, perform dolphin kick and begin using rhythmic breathing. Safety skills include recognizing when a swimmer needs help. Swimmers are evaluated on performance criteria and must complete it before moving to the next level.

Whale

Swimmers learn to swim 10 m, jump into deep water while maintaining surface support for 20 seconds and perform front and back crawl for 7 m. Safety skills include identifying safe swimming areas, jumping into deep water and changing direction in deep water. Swimmers are evaluated on performance criteria and must complete it before moving to the next level.

Swim Kids 1 – 4 (6 years and up)

Swim Kids 1
Swimmers develop front and back float, front and back glide, flutter kick (assisted), shallow water entries and exits and swim 5 metre.

Swim Kids 2
Swimmers learn front and back glide with flutter kick, develop front swim, complete deep-water activities (assisted) and swim 10 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 3
Swimmers increase their distance on front and back glide with flutter kick, perform flutter kick unassisted, wear a PFD in deep water, float in deep water and swim 15 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 4
Swimmers learn to back swim with shoulder roll and front crawl for 10 metre, work on flutter kick on back, perform kneeling dive, an introduction to sculling and swim 25 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 5 – 10 (6 years and up)

Swim Kids 5
Swimmers develop front crawl and learn back crawl 15 metre, whip kick on back, stride dive and treading water, perform head-first sculling on back and swim 50 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 6
Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl to 25 metre, learn elementary backstroke for 15 metre, dolphin kick, tread water in deep water, perform front dive and swim 75 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 7
Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl to 50 metre, elementary backstroke to 25 metre, learn front scull, perform whip kick on front and dolphin kick, learn stride entry and swim 150 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 8
Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl to 75 m, elementary backstroke, learn breaststroke for 15 metre, eggbeater/tread water, perform feet-first surface dive, standing shallow dive and swim 300 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 9
Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl to 100 metre, elementary backstroke to 50 metre and breaststroke to 25 metre, learn sidestroke kick, perform head-first surface dive and swim 400 metre continuously.

Swim Kids 10
Swimmers increase their distance on front and back crawl to 100 metre, elementary backstroke to 50 metre and breaststroke to 50 metre, learn sidestroke for 25 metre, perform dolphin kick (vertical), learn feet-first and head-first surface dives with underwater swim and swim 500 metre continuously.

Red Cross babysitting (11 – 14 years)

The Red Cross babysitting course covers everything from managing difficult behaviours to essential content on leadership and professional conduct as a babysitter. Babysitting promises to deepen and enhance the responsibility that older youth feel when caring for younger children. Provides direction when it comes to giving the appropriate care in the event of an emergency.

Standard First Aid & standard First Aid recertification (12+ years)

A comprehensive 2-day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) skills for those who need training due to work requirements or who want more knowledge to respond to emergencies at home.

Valid for 3 years.

Learn to be a lifeguard

Bronze Medallion (13+ years)

  • Must be 13 years of age by the last day of the course
  • Candidates are introduced to advanced lifesaving techniques, to aid them in performing challenging rescues of increased risk, with a team. This includes conscious and unconscious victims in varying water depths, as well as first aid scenarios. Participants develop stroke efficiency and endurance in timed swims (400m) and fitness training skills, as well as performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies.
  • Candidates are taught an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in the four components of water rescue education: judgement, knowledge, skills and fitness

Bronze Cross (13+ years)

  • Must be 13 years of age by the last day of the course
  • Must hold a Bronze Medallion Certification (does not need to be current)
  • Candidates expand their knowledge of advanced lifesaving techniques for challenging rescues of increased risk, continuing to work with a team. This includes conscious and unconscious victims in varying water depths, as well as first aid scenarios. Participants develop stroke efficiency and endurance in timed swims (400m) and fitness training skills, as well as performing patient assessments, managing aquatic spinal injuries, and preventing the loss of life in a variety of aquatic emergencies.

National lifeguard (15+ years)

  • Must be 15 years of age by the last day of the course
  • Must hold a Bronze Cross Certification (does not need to be current)
  • Must hold a current workplace approved Standard First Aid certification
  • Candidates develop sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, the confidence to use informed judgement, and a mature, responsible attitude towards the role of an aquatic first responder. This training emphasizes prevention of aquatic related emergencies, and effective rescue response in scenarios involving first aid treatment. Candidates develop teamwork, leadership; including the ability to lead a team of rescuers in major emergencies, and communication skills. Fitness requirements include, but are not limited to, a timed object recovery, 50m sprint, 50m rescue drill and 400m timed swim.

National lifeguard recertification (15+ years)

  • Must be 15 years of age
  • Must hold a Bronze Cross Certification (does not need to be current)
  • Must hold a current workplace approved Standard First Aid certification
  • National Lifeguard recertification is a review of knowledge and skills from the National Lifeguard course. Recertification is granted upon the ability to meet ALL performance criteria. Candidates are encouraged to practice skills and review knowledge to prepare for the recertification course. Consistent training, and maintaining an appropriate level of fitness is important to being able to lifeguard effectively.

Learn to be a swim instructor

Water Safety Instructor (15+ years)

  • Must be 15 years of age by the last day of the course
  • Must hold a Bronze Cross or Assistant Lifeguard Certification (can be expired)
  • Prepares candidates to instruct the Red Cross Swim programs. Candidates focus on strategies to introduce and develop fitness activities, skills and water safety, and swimming skills in the Red Cross Swim Preschool, Red Cross Swim Kids, Red Cross @ School, Red Cross Swim @ Camp, Red Cross Swim for Adults & Teens, and Red Cross Swim Adapted programs.

Squash programs

​Get active on the court with one of our registered squash programs. Or book a court and drop-in to play a match. Squash is a racquet and ball sport played on an indoor walled-in court. Squash is a fun and fast-paced sport to play with an enthusiastic community.

Junior Squash Introduction (6 – 9 years)
A 6-week youth program designed to introduce new players to the sport of squash with the opportunity to learn from a squash pro. These lessons teach game play, rules, and basic technical skills in a fun and exciting environment.

Junior Squash Development (10+ years)
A 6-week session for youth to develop and progress their skills in squash. This is a 45 minute session for youth 10+ years or for individuals with previous squash experience. Our Junior Development Program is aligned with Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD).

Women’s Introduction to Squash (16+ years)
A 6-week women’s only program to introduce new players to the sport of squash with the opportunity to learn from a squash pro. These lessons teach game play, rules, and basic technical skills in a fun and exciting environment.

Women’s Intermediate / Development Squash (16+ years)
A 6-week women’s only program for intermediate players with the opportunity to develop and learn from a squash pro. These lessons teach game play, rules, and basic technical skills in a fun and exciting environment. Age for registration is 16+ years.

Women’s Squash League (16+ years)
A 6-week women’s only squash league. A chance to play, improve, compete, socialize, and share the love of the game together.

Basketball programs

BC Bounce (Basketball) 
Recreation Excellence and BC Bounce are excited to provide Chilliwack youth, from Kindergarten to Grade 8, a fun way to learn the game of basketball. The program introduces the basic skills and game play with quality instruction, creative drills, and basic plays.

The 2-day a week program consists of 1 practice-day and 1 game-day. During practice sessions players can expect to learn the skills necessary to play the game. The second session is a basketball game-day where players will have the opportunity to practice what they have learnt and apply it into a game setting.

BC Bounce Basketball (Kindergarten – Grade 4)
This session will have practice-day on Tuesday and a game-day on Thursday. The practice-days will have a station format with each station working on different skills needed to play basketball. The game-day format will be short sided games, like 3 on 3.

BC Bounce Basketball (Grade 5 – 8)
This session will have practice-day on Tuesday and a game-day on Thursday. Players will have the last half hour to work on transition and game-like skills. Practice-days will have a station format with each station working on different skills needed to play basketball. The game-day format will be full 5 on 5 games.

Indoor soccer programs (coming soon)

Toddler And Youth Drills and Skills
Toddler and youth soccer drills and skills programs will introduce your child to fundamental principles of soccer. Fundamentals include dribbling, basic rules of the game, passing, shooting, and teamwork. Youth soccer programs will include focus on individual skills, fitness, teamwork, and sportsmanship, while having fun.

Indoor Soccer: Active Start (3 – 6 years)
Active Start: indoor soccer program is designed to introduce your child to the basics of soccer and the concept of teamwork. Your child will participate in drills, play various games, and have fun. Improve your child’s physical literacy and introduce them to the game of soccer in a fun and engaging environment.

Indoor Soccer: Skill Development (6 – 14 years)
Skills Development: indoor soccer program is designed for players looking to improve their soccer skills as well as enhancing ball mastery, passing, shooting, fitness levels, and taking part in creative soccer activities.

Little Athletes (8 months – 5 years)
Looking for something fun and active to do with your toddler? Come try out our Little Athletes parent and tot program. Our Recreation Excellence team will facilitate various activities that promote physical activity and positive development as well as engage and support toddlers in the principles of healthy child development.

Roaming Rascals (12 months – 5 years)
Introduce your child to active living through active play. Participate together in our parent and tot Roaming Rascals sessions. Climb, balance, slide, roll, stretch, jump, crawl, and have fun using the play equipment. Connect with other families in your community.

Tumble Time (18 months – 7 years)
Our Recreation Excellence team will lead you in fun activities that help your child explore fundamental gymnastic movements. Climb, balance, slide, roll, stretch, jump, run, crawl, and explore creative play and imagination.

Drop-in group fitness

Drop-in group fitness classes are taught by a variety of certified fitness professionals in the pool or in the fitness areas. These classes are first-come, first-served, and have a maximum number of participants based on the activity, space, and equipment needed. Spaces can not be reserved, held, or guaranteed. Guests can use their Recreation Excellence membership drop-in, punch pass, their 1, 3, or 12 month membership, or pay a transaction fee for each drop-in class.

Registered fitness programs

Registered fitness programs are typically taught by the same certified fitness professional for the duration of the session. These programs are scheduled for a session with a set start and end date. The registered programs usually have between 6 – 10 classes per session, on the same day of the week and time, over the course of a number of weeks. These registered programs provide specialty program participants a graduated series of skills that build or increase in difficulty. Participants are expected to register before the class start date. Classes are non-transferable and missed classes will not be refunded. Fees for registered fitness programs are not included in the Recreation Excellence drop-in punch pass or the 1, 3, or 12 month memberships.

Ideal for postnatal (1 – 48 months) moms and moms with children as school or daycare. Exercises are baby and toddler friendly, designed so you can interact with your little one while exercising and having fun. Older siblings (up to age 5) are welcome. All fitness levels benefit from this mobile class that includes cardio, strength, core and stretching. Postnatal participants should be 4 weeks postpartum (6 weeks for cesareans). Strollers are welcome.

Bootcamp

Bootcamp classes are held outdoors with an indoor location available during inclement weather. All levels are welcome to participate in this fun and challenging workout program. Bootcamp workouts emphasize total body functional training and strength training, incorporating body weight exercises. Burn calories, improve strength and cardiovascular fitness, while having fun. Workouts include a variety of techniques including high-intensity cardio, strength, and core training followed by cool-down and stretching. All fitness levels are welcome. Modifications for all exercises will be provided.
